Views is  involved with the Hope Foundation by having ”winter warmth” initiatives. The staff at Views have had a cake sale to raise money to purchase blankets in the past. This year Views worked with some of its suppliers (Waltons,  Grocery Express, Haartman Butchery & Selbie Bakery) The staff donated warm clothing and a few blankets. Waltons donated rulers and pencils for the 160 underprivileged children of the Grootkraal Primary School . The team went to visit the school to distribute all the items they collected and to serve the children warm vegetable soup and bread.

The Team set out for Oudtshoorn early morning to be at the school by 10h00 to warm up the soup and butter the bread before the children went to interval. We were greeted warmly by Jan Bester and the  school head master Llewellyn Mthembo. After setting up and the soup on the stove, half of the team stayed in the kitchen to butter the bread and the other half were taken on a tour by the principal. We visited the Grade 1 up to Grade 6 classes. In each class there was a brave little one or two eager to show off his or her reading or mathematical abilities. It was a great treat for us all.

We then served the soup and bread and watched the children enjoy their lunch and break from lessons. Some of the Views staff even took part in a game of rugby with the children. We were then treated to song and dance by the the children and took a few pictures together. The day was thoroughly enjoyed by both the Views Team and the children. We are all looking forward to next years “winter warmth” initiative.

“The experience at the hotel was phenomenal. The atmosphere throughout the hotel was so tranquil and the decor just gives you the illusion that you’re on the sea. The Premier suite which we stayed in including the view was magnificent. The room service including the opening of our bed at night made us felt like royalties. 

The spa and the treatments, as it was my first, was so relaxing. I must give a thumbs up to Gene. She really outdid herself! We had the most enjoyable time and will definitely come back and have already recommended it to friends and family.

The day started with a visit to “The Big Tree” situated approximately 15km’s on the Hoekwil road.  The tree is about 800 years old with a height of 33m. 

There is a beautiful 2km walk in the forest which is a must see.

The group then headed to Eden Adventures who are situated on the banks of the Touw River and offer various activities within the Wilderness Nature Reserve.

With a packed picnic and swimming gear they headed up the Touw River in a 2 man canoe.  The canoe comes equipped with a container for you to put your camera & back packs in to keep them dry.

Birdlife is abundant throughout the indigenous forest. 

After about 40 minutes of easy paddling they left the canoes and walk the 2^nd half of the Half Collared Kingfisher Trail for about another 40 minutes. 

The trail is on a manmade boardwalk so it is easy to navigate through the forest.

At the end of the trail they arrived at the most exquisite waterfall …

After enjoying a picnic and swim at the waterfall they headed back to their canoes and returned to Eden Adventures.

“From the moment we entered that little paradise of the Wilderness, we were blown away.  The views of the sea are amazing. The hotel’s design and finishing are symmetrical with the environment and all that brings such tranquility to one’s soul and serenity. I just love how you do five star!!! And I will not go back. You taught me what luxury is and what boutique hoteling is all about.

The rooms are marvellous.  Everything in the rooms is five star and nothing is compromised.  Quality, quality, quality. Excellence in the flooring, the bathrooms, the bedding, even the extra blanket in the wardrobe is of cuddling quality.  The teas and biscuits and the little bar, haha!!!  You just left wanting to try out everything. I marvelled and thought to myself, I can live like this. Breakfast was just an event of its own.  It should be marked as a separate activity on holiday itinerary.  I looked forward to it every morning.  Not only because of the champagne that you enjoy breakfast with, but also because no matter how late you arrive, you don’t get dried left-overs from people who got there first. I should also just mention that the views that you have while having breakfast, also make it difficult for one to want to leave. As cliched as it may be, the smiles and friendliness from the staff of the views, makes the stay all the more better. The staff is young and oozes just the right energy. All in all, I experienced royalty living, and boy-oh-boy is it addictive. Like, I mentioned on the day of our sad departure my only complaint with the service I received at the Views was that I wasn’t fore-warned of how addictive it is and should perhaps reserve an extra day. So, expect me soon.”

Opening Hours: Daily from 9am – 7pm. The Gym is open from 6am – 9pm for your convenience.

Surrender: Relax, this is time reserved especially for you. Trust your therapist, you are in the best hands, revel in your treatment and know that you deserve this healthy interlude. 

Communicating your preferences: We would like to customize your treatment to the finest detail of your preference. Please complete our consultation card prior to your treatment to guide us in our product and treatment selection.

Advance booking: Your preferred treatment time is important to us and we do recommend that you book as far in advance as possible.

Punctuality: Ideally arrive 15-30 minutes early so you can enjoy an unhurried transition into the Spa. If you are late, your treatment time may have to be shortened.

Medical conditions: Be sure to mention any medical conditions when you book your Spa day. Certain treatments may not be advisable for you.

Spa Cuisine: The Views Hotel offers two exquisite eating venues that overlooks the ocean. Both offer healthy wholesome meals to complete your day at the spa. Try not to eat for at least an hour before a treatment, and avoid the consumption of alcohol on the day of a treatment. Drink plenty of water before and afterward, especially if you plan to enjoy heat therapy.

Using shared facilities: On arrival you will be provided with a Spa robe and slip-on shoes. Swimsuits are required in all public areas. Always shower before entering any of the sauna or pools. When enjoying the sauna or steam room, always sit on your towel and wear the slip-on shoes provided by the Spa.

Whisper: Please keep conversations in the treatment areas at a low volume.

Cell phones: Please turn off all cell-phones before entering the Spa.

Smoking: With improved health as a goal we support a smoke free environment.

Children: Teenagers from the age of 12 are welcome when accompanied by an adult, for safety as well as the impact on the comfort and relaxation of others.

Cancellation: 24 hour cancellation period is required. Any appointment that is not cancelled with 24 hours notice will incur a 100% cancellation fee on all treatments.

Payment: Credit or debit card details will be taken to secure your booking, however treatments will not be charged until the day of your visit. Please ensure that you settle all charges before leaving the spa.

Scenic drives

• The 7 passes road
  Upon leaving Views Boutique Hotel & Spa, turn right on the N2 and proceed towards
  Knysna. As you approach the white bridge on the outskirts of Knysna, turn left
  immediately before the bridge. The signboard reads Belvidere/Brenton-on Sea. Stay left.
  This road will take you past Lightleys holiday Houseboats and on to the Phantom Pass.
  At the top of Phantom Pass you will reach a t-junction connecting you with the
  Rheenendal Road. Turn right. This road will continue to take you past Rheenendal village
  (Tottie`s eatery, petrol station, shop and postal agency is your landmark on the left
  hand side) and on to where the tar soon gives way to gravel (landmark is Homtini
  Guest Farm on your left), the road winds down to a concrete bridge across the Homtini
  River. After the bridge, the road climbs out of the gorge, passes through farmlands,
  then drops again to the Karatara River. After crossing the Karatara River on a single-
  lane bridge, the road passes the Karatara forestry settlement. The next pass leads
  through the gorge of the Hoogekraal River, and the one after this takes you across
  the Diep River. You reach the tar again roughly 35 km from Rheenendal, and soon
  after this you pass the small settlement of Woodville. Turn right onto the gravel road
  signposted ‘Big Tree and Picnic Spot’. Return to the tarred road and turn right, taking
  note of your kilometres. After a little over 3 km, turn right onto a gravel road for
  ‘Saasveld’. The road now negotiates three more river-valley passes. Note your
  kilometres as you cross the Touw River, and 4,6 km later keep straight, onto the
  tar, for George. You then cross the Silver River, and after this the Kaaimans River.
  The old stone bridges over the Silver and Kaaimans Rivers have been built in 1903
  and 1904 respectively and proclaimed National Monuments.

PHILOSOPHY

VIEWS Building forms part of a larger development called Waves at Wilderness. Waves consists of a mix of Residential and Commercial projects on land that consisted of some of the most desirable beachfront properties in Wilderness and some badly planned and environmentally desecrated real estate. The challenge was to re-plan the fundamentally flawed parts by:

• retaining the unspoiled parts
• rehabilitating the damaged portion

and

• creating sustainable project
• involving the needs of the local community

EXISTING DEVELOPMENT NODE

VIEWS Building was developed in an existing development node on land previously used. The land use and redevelopment is in agreement with the Wilderness Local Structure Plan ((1997)

HISTORICAL STRUCTURES

The VIEWS site was originally used as a sewage treatment plant for the then called Wilderness Holiday Inn. The plant and its surroundings was an ecological disaster zone with its byproducts just emptied down the dune-face. Developing VIEWS started with the removal of the old plant structures and cleaning of the whole area, including the dune-face.

ALIEN VEGETATION

The VIEWS Site and its surroundings were heavily infested with alien invasive species such as Pine and Rooikrans (Acacia Cyclops). As part of the preparation of the land for development the whole site as well as part of the dune-face were cleared of all alien vegetation and is kept that way

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT

VIEWS Building was the subject of a NEMA Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) under the auspices of the Dept of Environmental Affairs & Planning (DEA&P). The EIA involved numerous Environmental as well as Planning issues, but focused on the visual impact and the immediate environmental impact of the building. Particularly of great concern was the issue of skyline pollution and stormwater management which in planning was addressed in great detail. A Record of Decision was granted in November 2007. The details of the EIA and ROD are a matter of public record.

CONSERVATION

After removal of the sewer plant, VIEWS site contained no vegetation apart from a cluster of indigenous White Milkwood (Sideroxylon inerme) trees in an awkward position from a planning point of view. The Site Development Plan therefore revolved around protecting these trees as far as possible. This was done successfully by planning around the trees.

REHABILITATION

The historical activities left a legacy of environmentally destroyed areas and all these are to be rehabilitated using indigenous material only. However, due to the severe drought and the resultant water restrictions in the area, this program has been put on hold.

THE BUILDING PROCESS

VIEWS Building was constructed under the guidance of an EMP (Environmental Management Plan) approved by DEA&P and overseen by an independent Environmental Officer. Great care was taken to minimize the construction footprint to the site and not to infringe on the environmentally sensitive areas such as the dune face and the cluster of Milkwood trees.

GARDENING

VIEWS Building has quite limited garden areas as such, but fairly large areas need to be rehabilitated from historical damage. All gardening near the dune face is with approved indigenous plants. In areas further away from the dune face only non self propagating approved planting is planned. All gardening has been put on hold pending the breaking of the drought. All the exposed soil has been protected against wind erosion by covering with bark.

IRRIGATION

All plants are chosen to be self sustainable in the specific conditions of the site, i.e. loose sand that dries out quickly, salty loaded sea winds and extended periods of drought. Experience has shown that even such plants require a period of irrigation until established, after which only very limited irrigation will be required.

DUNE STABILITY

VIEWS Building is situated about 40m above Wilderness Beach on an ancient, but stable dune. One of the main concerns raised during the EIA was the issue of “dune stability”. This, often misunderstood, real problem was addressed in detail in the EIA, but in short involves three important solutions:

• lowering the centre of gravity by “in” and not “on” the dune.
• spreading the weight of the building by building on a so called “floating raft”
• controlling all Stormwater generated on the site and by the building by ducting it through and around the building to the main municipal Stormwater system.

HUMAN ENVIRONMENT

Apart from providing numerous temporary jobs, VIEWS Building had minimal impact on the people of Wilderness during construction. More than 80 permanent news jobs have so far been created by the 4 ventures. This will grow as the 4 businesses mature.

COMMUNITY

VIEWS Building has provided some much needed facilities for the Wilderness Community i.e. two sea-view restaurants, a Spa and Gym.

BOARDWALK

A new solidly constructed boardwalk, replacing but following the footprint of the previous unsafe structure, will provide public access to the beach. It crosses an inherently unstable layer of about 1m of sand, dumped from the original excavations for the Wilderness Holiday Inn. Special auguring rather than conventional digging techniques are used to minimize the impact during construction and to ensure the required depth of footing.

THE BUILDING

VIEWS Building incorporates a number of systems that have been selected to minimize the “real” environmental footprint:

• Water:  The main use of water in VIEWS Building is in bathrooms. The separation of soap contaminated “grey” water and its recycling for say gardening is not permitted since the natural draining of the site is towards the sensitive coastal dune and beach.
• Waste water: All waste is either pumped or gravity fed into the municipal sewer system.
• Stormwater: Uncontrolled concentration of water during heavy downpours would quickly cause extensive erosion of the dune face. Thus, all the Stormwater generated by the site and by VIEWS building is carefully collected and discharged via the safe municipal Stormwater discharger to the west.
• Electricity: All Suites are equipped with a FOB switch that activates the lights during occupancy only. The use of LED (light emitting diodes) and CFL (compact fluorescent lamps) wherever possible, conserves the use of electricity.
• Internal Climate Control:  To maximise the unique attributes of the site i.e. the “views”, VIEWS Building has been designed with large glass panels, thus the building could require simultaneous heating and cooling of some areas. The air conditioning systems are designed to “pump” heat from warmer to colder areas. To limit the heat load in summer, the roof and atrium windows are fitted with “Solar Shield” heat reflecting glass.
• Heating of Water
  • a state of the art vacuum tube solar heater heats the outdoor pool
  • High efficiency heat pumps heat the indoor pool and assist in heating the outdoor pool
  • A Central boiler system rather than individual geysers optimises the heating of water
• Air pollution VIEWS Building is fitted with an Environmental Ventilation Unit that filters and purifies the air from the restaurant’s kitchen and refuse room.
• Waste Management: Waste removal is done trice weekly by the local authority. No waste disposal is done on site.
• Recycling: Southern Cape recycling collect glass, cans, paper and cardboard.

TEMPERATURE

The Garden Route in general and Wilderness in particular, has one of the most moderate climates in the world. Temperatures hardly ever drop below 10 C or rise above 30 C. Due to VIEWS proximity to the ocean it is generally even more moderate than George; warmer in winter, and cooler in summer

WIND

The Garden Route is by far the least windy coastal area in South Africa. The graphs on the left show the wind speed distribution for George, Durban, Cape Town and Port Elizabeth. This clearly indicates that the predominant winds speed in George will be in the 0 to 12 km/hour range making for refreshing summer breezes

SUNSHINE

The Garden Route enjoys the most sunny days of any coastal area in South Africa. The graphs show monthly potential sunshine percentages, clearly showing good results for George.

The Luxury Suites are exceptional value for money, each offering different features. Suite 19 is a corner suite right on top of VIEWS and has a balcony that wraps two sides with panoramic views from the southwest to the north east. It sleeps 2 extra on a full size pull out sofa.

Nature has been generous – the landscape to the east is rugged and dramatic with centuries of wind and tide action carving unique and fantastic shapes into the jagged cliffs and rock pools. The ever-changing reef offshore guards the coastline and provides contrasting conditions from raging white water to tranquil aqua tidal pools. At low tide, all manner of tidal creatures are to be found - spectacularly coloured sea anemones, comical sand crabs, and for the lucky, maybe even a glimpse of the shy octopus.

Safe and secluded, this is the ideal beach to walk or run, the only likely companions being precious oyster catchers, gulls and occasionally, a local fisherman.

The coast is constantly patrolled by dolphins, often seen exuberantly surfing the break. In calving season Southern Right whales use this area as a nursery sometimes coming close inshore, allowing a privileged sighting.

This uninterrupted paradise stretches eastwards for 15 kilometers, all the way to Gericke’s point, providing the perfect environment away from crowds to sunbathe, stroll, keep fit, or simply just be.

To the west, dunes and soft golden sands lead the way to Leentjies Klip. An easy 5km stroll away, this favourite local swimming beach is safe for bathing and snorkeling. Paragliders cannot resist the ideal conditions that exist so the sky is often filled with colourful canopies.

The beach culminates at the mouth of the Touw river where the Kaaimans River railway bridge spans the lagoon high above the water.

Wilderness Beach truly is therapy for the soul.

Use the N1 from Johannesburg in the direction of Cape Town. At Colesberg keep left following
the N10 to Middelburg. There keep right taking the N9 through Graaff Reinet to George. In
George follow Langenhoven St, at the first traffic circle exit left. Continue past the Provincial
Hospital. Continue straight through several stop streets. At the second traffic circle exit the
1st left into Knysna Rd. Continue through George passing the Garden Route Mall on the right
to join the N2 from Cape Town. Descend down Kaaimans Pass. Continue straight through
