Nothing like a brand-new year to bring out the best in us.  Health should be the #1 priority for all of us as it is the one ‘investment’ that serves us for a lifetime.

Want to lose weight FAST? This question opens the floodgates to a myriad of fad diets which apparently are going nowhere slowly.  When reading about these ‘miracle diets’, one realises the lengths people will go to lose weight, and how easy it is to get swept up in a fad or look for a shortcut, even if it’s harmful to your health (or downright scary!).

The level of crazy alone is enough to put one off food for a while!  The Cotton Ball Diet for instance allows you to eat cotton balls before meals. The idea is that they fill your stomach so you’re not hungry and don’t eat too much.  Still hungry?  Then ‘Ear Stapling’ might interest you…it involves having surgical staples placed in the inner cartilage of the ear. The staples are believed to stimulate pressure points that control your appetite, like acupuncture.  Better to tie a rubber band around your wrist and snap it to remind yourself not to overeat?

Not hardcore enough?  The Feeding Tube Diet involves inserting a feeding tube into the nose that runs to the stomach.  Numerous side effects include strangers staring at the hose in your nose.  ‘Right up there crazy’ is the tongue patch which involves sewing a patch of plastic mesh onto the tongue. The patch makes it difficult and painful to eat or swallow.

Hopefully your brain is shouting NO! STOP THE MADNESS! right about now…There’s no such thing as a miracle diet, but proper nutrition combined with training and the right mindset is as close to a real miracle as you’ll ever find.  This, we all know, is the bottom line.

When we make health our highest value, that alone will go a long way toward keeping us away from the next fad weight loss diet. Forget about weight loss and focus on burning fat and building muscle. It’s not about how much you weigh, it’s about what that weight consists of.

May 2018 be the year we focus on getting fitter and stronger!  So, trainers on…hit the gym!
